What’s Included in the Toyota Warranty?

February 15th, 2024 by

Reliability and longevity are key reasons many car buyers choose Toyota over other brands. Toyota has a reputation for producing easy-to-maintain vehicles that last many years. The automaker offers a generous warranty with new vehicle purchases as a form of quality assurance. If you’re seeking a new Toyota or you recently bought one, it’s essential to understand how the warranty works, as it can help you save a lot on future repairs. Our Classic Toyota of Tyler team created this guide to clarify what’s included in Toyota warranty coverage.

What Do Toyota Warranties Cover?

The factory warranty from Toyota comprises several warranties that collectively cover every component of your vehicle, with several exclusions. You may receive several types of warranties depending on your chosen Toyota model.

Basic Warranty

Toyota’s basic warranty, or bumper-to-bumper warranty, protects your vehicle’s systems and components for three years or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first. If any part of your car malfunctions or breaks down due to a manufacturing defect, you can have it replaced free of charge at your local Toyota service center.

The basic warranty doesn’t cover normal wear and tear and maintenance items, such as tires, brake pads, and windshield wipers. It also won’t pay for specific maintenance-related expenses, such as cleaning and polishing. Other exclusions include failures or damage that result from negligence and abuse, improper repairs and modifications, and situational and environmental conditions, such as accidents, theft, and weather events.

Powertrain Warranty

On top of the basic warranty, Toyota also offers a powertrain warranty lasting six years or 60,000 miles. This warranty protects components under the hood, including the engine, transmission, drivetrain, shafts, joints, bearings, seals, gaskets, mounts, and electronics. It may cover certain parts connected to the exhaust and emissions systems, such as the catalytic converter, for eight years or 80,000 miles.

Although few Toyotas use a manual transmission, you should keep in mind that the powertrain warranty coverage doesn’t include the clutch linings. You’ll also have to bear the costs of replacing spark plugs and fuses if they go bad. Other exemptions are similar to those that apply to the basic warranty.

Rust Perforation Warranty

Toyota’s factory warranty includes rust perforation warranty coverage, which is good for six years and unlimited miles. This type of warranty covers holes that result from corrosion, but it may not offer protection against surface rust. It also helps pay the cost of repairing or replacing an original body panel if it develops a rust hole.

Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Warranty

The warranties for hybrid and electric Toyota vehicles have unique terms and conditions. Policies for pre-2020 models cover the battery pack for eight years or 100,000 miles. On the other hand, models built for 2020 or later offer a 10-year or 150,000-mile battery warranty. If the battery of your hybrid or electric Toyota has less than 70% of its original charge capacity before the warranty expires, you may be eligible for a free replacement.

Besides the battery, the warranty covers certain electric powertrain parts, including the motors, inverters, control modules, and cooling components, for eight years or 100,000 miles. Parts outside the powertrain get the same basic warranty as the gasoline-powered Toyota models.

Toyota Certified Used Vehicle Warranty

The purpose of the Toyota Certified Used Vehicle program is to produce the finest pre-owned Toyota models. It involves a rigorous 160-point quality assurance inspection to ensure each used vehicle meets the requirements for certification. These Toyotas come with a CARFAX vehicle history report and a 12-month or 12,000-mile basic warranty for added peace of mind. Moreover, the program provides a powertrain warranty and roadside assistance coverage lasting seven years or 100,000 miles.

Does Toyota Offer Extended Warranties?

If you plan to keep your Toyota vehicle long after your basic warranty expires, Toyota offers an array of extended coverage options. These include excess wear and use protection, vehicle service agreements, and prepaid maintenance plans. Although they aren’t actually warranties, these plans can help reduce out-of-pocket expenses when your standard warranty is no longer in effect. Several plans and packages are available, which may vary depending on your car model and its condition. What Is the ToyotaCare Program?

In addition to warranties, Toyota offers the ToyotaCare plan with the purchase of a new Toyota. This amazing perk includes complimentary scheduled maintenance for two years or 25,000 miles. Examples of covered services include oil changes, oil filter changes, fluid checks, tire rotations, and multipoint inspections. In addition, the plan provides free roadside assistance services for two years and unlimited miles. While the coverage is still valid, you don’t have to pay for towing, winching, battery jump-starts, spare tire installation, or fuel delivery if you get stranded in the middle of nowhere.

If you want additional assistance, consider buying into ToyotaCare Plus. This program covers the same components as the regular ToyotaCare plan but lasts longer. It extends complimentary scheduled maintenance to four years or 45,000 miles and free roadside assistance to four years and unlimited miles.
