The 2022 Toyota GR86

If you’re hunting for a sports coupe with a ton of power and maneuverability, the 2022 Toyota GR86 is the road-runner for you. It has a smooth look, featuring a mostly line-free body style outside of a few areas. It comes with a black grille, eye-shaped headlights, and 17-inch 10-spoke machine-finished alloy wheels. Don’t let the 2.4-liter 4-cylinder box engine fool you. It produces 228 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, but this GR86 only weighs around 2,800 pounds. The 2022 GR86 is available with your choice of either a six-speed automatic or a six-speed manual.

This sports coupe is available in the Base and Premium trim levels. When you upgrade to Premium, you get upgrades from fabric upholstery to Alcantara & Leather upholstery, standard seats to heated seats, a six-speaker sound system to an eight-speaker one, and 18-inch alloy wheels. The Premium version comes with special sport class Michelin Pilot tires. Finally, a duckbill spoiler is added to the rear of the GR86. This sports coupe is available in Raven, TRUENO Blue, Halo, and Track Red for the Base, plus Neptune and Pavement for the Premium.

Interior features for the 2022 Toyota GR86 include smart device remote engine start, a leather steering wheel, cloth upholstered 6-way power-adjustable sport bucket seats, a leather and aluminum gear shifter, and Ultrasuede door trim. Premium trim level interior features also include dual-zone automatic air conditioning, heated versions of the front seats, cruise control with steering wheel controls, delay-off interior lighting, and leatherette seat backs. Both trim levels of the 2022 Toyota GR86 come with a unified double-wishbone strut suspension system. This layout grants superior road stability and maximized tire-to-road contact.

This sports car’s entertainment features include an eight-inch infotainment touch screen display, a six-speaker (Base) or eight-speaker (Premium) Pioneer sound system, Bluetooth, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay app mirroring through the infotainment system, and an amplifier. The USB 2.0 ports allow for charging, data transfer, and iPod connectivity and control.

The 2022 Toyota GR Supra

If you like the GR86 but want to dial things up a bit, consider the 2022 Toyota GR Supra. It is available in four trim levels: the 2.0, 3.0, 3.0 Premium, and A91-CF Edition. The 2.0 trim level comes with a 2.0-liter twin-scroll single-turbo four-cylinder engine granting 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Upgrade to the 3.0 to get a 3.0-liter six-cylinder capable of pounding out 382 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque. For a sports car that only has a curb weight of around 3,200 pounds, that is a remarkably powerful engine.

The eight-speed automatic transmission has been carried over from the previous year, but in response to overwhelming demand, a six-speed intelligent manual transmission is also available. Intelligent manual transmissions are a variety that uses the computer to time what would be clutch pedal activations. There is no clutch pedal in the 2022 Toyota GR Supra.

The 2.0 trim level comes with 18-inch cast-aluminum 10-spoke wheels with dual-tone finishes. When you choose it, you’ll automatically gain access to one year of membership with the National Auto Sport Association. Other 2.0 features include an 8.8-inch infotainment system featuring Supra Command programming, a dual rear exhaust system with polished stainless steel tips, a more aerodynamic underbody panel, carbon-fiber interior trim, and an 8.8-inch fully digital LCD gauge cluster. It makes zero to 60 in five seconds.

Upgrading from 2.0 to 3.0, you’ll gain access to adaptive variable sport suspension. This suspension system is stupefyingly responsive, allowing drivers to react to changing road conditions with remarkable quickness. The adaptive nature of this sports car’s suspension system makes it perfect for handling roads with variable conditions. Don’t worry. You still get the one-year NASA membership when you upgrade to this or any higher trim level.

Other features of the 3.0 include an active rear sport differential system, a brushed version of the 2.0’s exhaust system, 14-way adjustable seats with memory settings, and engine bay chassis braces. Active rear sport differential systems distribute power to the wheels in a way that optimizes their handling and safety simultaneously, a remarkable plus for any sports car.

Moving from the 3.0 to the 3.0 Premium trim level, you’ll gain access to incredibly comfortable 14-way heated power-adjustable seating upholstered with black leather and a crystal-clear 12-speaker JBL Hi-Fi surround sound system with a 500-Watt amplifier. This version of the 2022 Toyota GR Supra gets Brembo brand 4-piston fixed-caliper disc brakes. These brakes have more contact area than other forms, making them ideal for braking from high speeds. This is also the trim where you’ll get access to special sport pedals, a full-color head-up display, Qi-compatible smartphone charging, and a Toyota Supra Connect trial.

An upgrade to the A91-CF Edition is an upgrade to carbon-fiber canards, splitters, and side rockers. Carbon fiber is the best vehicle material available for sports cars. Racing teams use it to withstand the high-energy drag forces that are commonly encountered in high-intensity races. They are also extremely lightweight compared to standard car plating materials, allowing the A91-CF Edition to make the dash from zero to 60 in a mind-bending 3.9 seconds. This trim level also gets a carbon fiber spoiler, 19-inch forged aluminum twin-spoke wheels with a matte-black finish, and special Alcantara & leather sport seats with red stitches.

These two sports cars represent years of planning and engineering refinement on the part of Toyota, and it shows in how they drive.
