5 Ways To Enjoy the Fall Outdoors in Tyler, TX

Tyler Municipal Rose Garden Events

If you think rose gardens are only for spring, think again. The Tyler Municipal Rose Garden blooms twice a year, once in May and once in October, making it a great fall destination. They also host some great events to go along with the season. Texas Master Gardeners hosts a gardening series on the first Tuesday of each month in the fall, so you can feast your eyes and your ears. On Oct. 4, Anne Pattullo will present “Not All Bulbs Are Daffodils” and on Nov. 1, Andie Rathbone will present “Bundle Up Your Garden.”

On Oct. 13-16, the garden also hosts the Texas Rose Festival, a yearly tradition since 1933 which includes a Queen’s Coronation, Rose presentations, tea, ribbon cutting, and a rose parade. Afterwards, you can enjoy over 200 types of roses in this 14-acre garden. You can also check out the Tyler Rose Museum and Gift Shop, which tells the story of the garden and offers accessories and home garden pieces you may purchase as souvenirs.

Lanes Chapel Methodist Church Pumpkin Patch

There is hardly a more iconic outdoor fall event than a visit to a pumpkin patch, and if you’re in Tyler, Texas, the Lanes Chapel Methodist Church Pumpkin Patch is a great local option. For the last eight years, the church has filled their front lawn with pumpkins and spend the month of October offering pumpkins and fun events for the family as a fundraiser. The event includes train rides, yard games, and face painting. You can also commemorate the day by visiting the photo booth and picking out a pumpkin to bring home.

The first day of the event is Sept. 24, and it continues every day of the week until Oct. 31. This gives you plenty of time to schedule in your autumn visit. All the profits from the pumpkins and gourds go toward the church’s outreach ministries. The event itself is free for families to enjoy.

Tyler Scotsfest

The Tyler Scotsfest is an annual celebration of Scottish cultural heritage hosted by the TYLERSCOTSFEST Clan at the South Springs Baptist Church. This year, it will take place on Oct. 22, and it is free for any member of the public to join in the festivities. These include exciting Highland Games, complete with a caber toss, hammer throw, sheaf toss, open stone put, weighted distance toss, and weighted height toss. The competition comes with the opportunity to win fabulous prizes. There are even kids’ highland games, so little ones can join in the fun.

You can also browse beautiful handmade crafts and foods from local vendors. If you’re interested in traditional clothing, check out the weaver shop or one of the many clan booths. Kids might enjoy the bouncy castle and face painting opportunities. Meanwhile, the whole family can enjoy traditional performances at the main stage, including traditional step dancing and musical performances by the likes of bagpiper Paul Watson and Irish fiddler Keyreel Raskolenko.

Zombie Apocalypse Hike

If you’re looking for some spooky family fun, the Zombie Apocalypse Hike, hosted by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Service, might be the event for you. Everyone will meet up at the Whispering Pines Trailhead at Tyler State Park. From there, the group will set off on a 1-mile hike without cell phones or any other type of electronics or transportation. Along the way, they’ll play a fun survival game to see who can get to the end of the apocalyptical event.

If you want to play, be sure to bring walking or hiking shoes and wear the appropriate clothes for the weather. You should also bring a water bottle and your Halloween sprit.
